What is Impotence Physical Causes of Impotence And How is Impotence Treated
Impotence is defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection to perform intercourse or ejaculation.
There are two forms of impotence: primary and secondary. Men with primary impotence have never had sufficient erection for satisfactory intercourse. This form of impotence is rare and is often caused by extreme psychological conditions, such as intense fear of intimacy, extreme feelings of guilt, and severe anxiety.
Physical causes of impotence
1. A very common cause of impotence is when blood flow to the penis is impaired due to atherosclerosis, also known as hardening of the arteries. In atherosclerosis, the arteries are clogged and narrowed, resulting in reduced blood flow. High cholesterol, high blood pressure obesity, diabetes, and smoking are all risk factors for atherosclerosis.
2. In some men, blood can flow in to the penis easily, but the problem is that it leaks out again, so an erection cannot be sustained. This is called venous leakage. Doctors aren't certain of the cause of venous leakage, but they can perform surgery to help repair it.
3. Both forms of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2, are common causes of impotence: men who have diabetes are 3 times more likely to have impotence than other men. Diabetes contributes to impotence because it can damage blood vessels and cause a type of nerve damage known as peripheral neuropathy.
4. Prescribed drugs used to treat high blood pressure, ulcer, depression, prostate cancer, as well as drugs to prevent baldness or to aid dieting, can have side effects that include impotence. In this case, the impotence lasts as long as you are taking the drugs.
5. The advanced stages of prostate cancer can affect the nerves and arteries that are vital for an erection. Radiation treatment for prostate cancer can harm the erectile tissues of the penis, and surgery can cause nerve or artery damage to the penis. Treatment for advanced prostate cancer often includes drugs that counteract testosterone, and commonly cause erectile dysfunction as well as loss of sexual interest.
6. Many men find that when they're suffering from depression, they lose interest in sex and can't get or keep an erection. Asking your doctor for treatments for depression may help alleviate your erection problems as well.

How is impotence treated?
Earlier, there were not many treatment options for this condition, but because it has become such a large problem, a number of studies that has resulted in the discovery of numerous treatments and medicines that can help treat it, have been conducted in recent 30 years.
It is important that you consult your doctor for help to choose the type of ED treatment which is best for you. Here are some of the most widely used medicines to treat impotence today
1. Viagra has helped an estimated 20 million people to enjoy a better sex life. Available in different strengths, depending on the severity of your condition, Viagra can be taken 30 minutes before sex and lasts up to four hours.
2. Cialis Once a Day is the only daily treatment available which offers a long-term solution for erectile dysfunction. It is most suitable for those with persistent erectile problems.
3. Known as 'the weekend pill' it lasts for up to 36 hours, allowing couples to enjoy greater spontaneity during their love making. Cialis should be taken at least 30 minutes before sex. It's also available in a low daily dose to treat impotence for a longer term.
4. Levitra is more suitable for older men, and those with underlying health conditions, such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. It should be taken 20 - 30 minutes before sex and lasts for up to five hours.
5. Some doctors recommend patients to talk about their problems with their partner or a therapist, to ease the psychological burden of impotence. Unfortunately, not all patients profit from this.
