Prostate Cancer - Common Symptoms and Possible Treatments

Prostate Cancer - Common Symptoms and Possible Treatments
Today, prostate cancer has emerged second most common cancer even if it generally attacks men above age 45. Following article will introduce the common symptoms of prostate cancers and possible treatments.

Every year, more than 100,000 people are diagnosed with prostate cancer, which is probably most common type of cancer among men not only in UK but all over the world. Cells in the prostate glands grow abnormally and uncontrollably leading to the condition of prostate cancer. The severity of prostate cancer is characterized by the rate of growth of cancer cells in prostate glands, the prostate cancer may be fast growing or it may develop slowly. Slow development of prostate cancer is a deceiving characteristic of majority of prostate cancers as people with slow growing prostate cancer do not realize that they are being attacked by it. Fast growing prostate cancer can cause multiple cancers situation; as there are high chances of cancer cells spreading to the other parts of the body.

Prostate cancer is generally common place among men above the age of 45 years. A chance of developing prostate cancer somehow depends upon the family history of individual. If immediate predecessor (i.e. father or brother) of the person was diagnosed with prostate cancer at early stage of life, then the person should be careful as the chances of him developing prostate cancer are much higher. Cancer of any type show hereditary characteristics, the chances of developing prostate cancer increases with the mutation in the gene BRCA2 (faulty BRCA2 gene).

As we know, cancer of any type is an uncontrolled growth of cells. This phenomenon normally gets triggered because of gene mutations as given above, or it may get triggered as some chemicals affect the cell growth. Radio active substances, chemicals such as toluene are some of chemicals which trigger such change in cell growth.

Common symptoms of prostate cancer include enlargement of prostate glands as men get older. As the time passes, the enlargement in prostate glands affects the urination. It becomes very hard to control urine and the frequency of urination increases i.e. you have to rush to the toilet more often to pass it. As the prostate glands increases in size, the urine passage goes on narrowing and people suffering from prostate cancer experience it difficult to start urine flow. The urine color changes from normal to darker yellow and reddish yellow as blood and semen gets mixed in urine. The patient experiences excessive pain in pelvis, back area, hips, thighs etc. The symptoms given above, matches with some other conditions/diseases related to some areas like pelvic bone, non-cancer disease of prostate such as BPH (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy), so if you come across any of above symptoms, you should visit your doctor to confirm its not prostate cancer you are carrying.

Your doctor will carry a diagnosis of your condition in order to find out if you are suffering from prostate cancer; it includes blood test, X-ray tests, biopsy in which tissues are taken from affected/susceptible area and observed under microscope, ultrasound scanning for the abnormal changes, physical tests and some other diagnostic tests. In blood test, doctor test for protein named PSA in your body in order to find out any possible chances to determine cancer. Your family history might also help in diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Once the patient is diagnosed with prostate cancer, the doctor may resume treatment on the cancer as per the requirement/condition. The treatment includes surgery which off-course is decided taking into consideration the stage of cancer. If it is possible, some part of the prostate glands is removed, some healthy tissues/cells are also removed so as to make it sure that the cancer does not spread in other healthy cells. The other treatment includes radio therapy, the cancer cells are destroyed using high energy rays.

Chemotherapy is also employed to treat cancer. Generally hormonal therapy is preferred over chemotherapy treatment as chemotherapy has very limited uses. Along with all the above treatments, there are some other treatments which are used to ease the pain, and minimize the effect of the cancer on the patient.

As I always have included in my articles on other type of cancers, it is very important to eat healthy food while treatment of cancer is being carried out. Health of the patient degrades as an effect of cancer treatments used; healthy food helps our body in preparing for the backup necessary in such condition.
