Yellow Discharge

Yellow Discharge
Yellow discharge or yellow vaginal discharge can serve as an indicator of some kind of infections, especially if it is accompanied by itching, swelling, foul odor and lower abdominal pain. In this article, a few of the possible causes of yellow vaginal discharge have been explained to help you understand more about this condition. It is not abnormal to have a small amount of vaginal discharge during the reproductive years. The normal vaginal discharge is clear or white that helps to drain out the old cells and bacteria from inside the vagina. In other words, the normal vaginal discharge helps to keep the vagina clean. Vaginal discharge is nothing but the fluid produced by the cervix, uterus and the vagina. The normal vaginal discharge is usually clear or whitish in color, but can turn a bit yellowish on drying, which is quite normal. What is not normal is a change in the color of vaginal discharge and a foul odor. Vaginal discharge that is not normal can cause itching or a burning sensation and irritation as well. So, if you get yellow smelly discharge, then it could be a sign of infection. Below here are some possible causes of yellow discharge in women.

Causes of Yellow Discharge

Several factors can cause vaginal discharge that is yellow in color, thick and bears a foul odor. Some women can get such yellow discharge before period, while others can get it after period. Vaginal discharge that is yellow in color could be associated with vaginitis. Vaginitis can be caused by candida yeast, or trichomonas protozoa. Vaginitis caused by candida is more common and it can cause thick vaginal discharge of white or yellow color. If the discharge is yellow, greenish or gray in color and is frothy, then it can be caused by the trichomonas protozoa. Infection caused by trichomonas protozoa is known as 'trichomoniasis'. If the vaginal discharge is white or yellow, but thin and homogenous, then it may indicate bacterial vaginosis.

Sometimes, a large amount of yellow discharge can be a sign of cervicitis as well. Cervicitis is the condition, characterized by the inflammation of the cervix. It can cause vaginal discharge that can be yellow or grayish in color and bears a bad odor. The vaginal discharge associated with cervicitis can appear to be pus like. This type of discharge is called mucopurulent discharge. Apart from these, yellow vaginal discharge can be caused by conditions like, cervical polyps (smooth finger shaped growth of red color inside the cervical canal), sexually transmitted diseases like, gonorrhea and pelvic inflammatory disease.

Pale yellow discharge during pregnancy, which does not smell bad can be normal. Women can experience an increase in watery discharge during pregnancy due to an increase in the flow of blood to the vaginal area and also because of rising levels of pregnancy hormones. In early pregnancy, the discharge is more likely to be white or clear, but in late pregnancy, the discharge can assume a light yellow color. But, if the vaginal discharge is frothy or it develops a foul smell and causes itching and irritation, then it can be caused by an infection. This type of yellow discharge in early pregnancy, as well as in late pregnancy should be medically evaluated immediately to rule out the possibility of an infection.

Yellow Vaginal Discharge Symptoms

Yellow discharge may not be accompanied by any other symptoms, if it is not associated with any kind of infection or health problem. But, if it is associated with an infection of some kind, then one can observe symptoms like, itching or a burning sensation and swelling around the vulva. Yellow vaginal discharge caused by infection can be thick, just like cottage cheese or it can be foamy or frothy. It may also smell bad and can be accompanied by symptoms like, abdominal pain, especially during intercourse.

Yellow Vaginal Discharge Treatment

Physicians start the treatment for yellow discharge, only after ascertaining the underlying causes. They can perform a number of test and examinations for this purpose. Treatment for yellow vaginal discharge can vary to a great extent, depending on the underlying causes. As for example, if it is caused by Trichomoniasis, then your physician can prescribe antibiotics. If bacterial vaginosis is the underlying cause, then antibiotics along with vaginal creams can be recommended. Antibiotics can also be required for treating cervicitis and gonorrhea. On the other hand, anti-fungal medications are required for the vaginal yeast infection treatment.

To sum up, yellow discharge can be an indicator of several different conditions indicating various women's health problems. Therefore, it is better to get the condition medically evaluated in order to find out what exactly yellow vaginal discharge could mean. In the meantime, be sure to keep your genital area clean and dry, avoid wearing tight fitting clothes and undergarments, avoid the use of perfumed soaps and drink plenty of fluid or water.
