When does premature ejaculation require treatment?

When does premature ejaculation require treatment?
Over the past 15 years, men’s sexual health has come leaps and bounds. First, there was the release of Viagra onto the market. When this happened, we became aware of just how common erectile dysfunction is in men. More recently, a drug called Dapoxetine has gained approval in numerous European countries as well as New Zealand. Dapoxetine is an antidepressant drug which is used for treating premature ejaculation.
Before Dapoxetine, few studies had been done on premature ejaculation. Now that Dapoxetine is available, we are starting to see the impact it is going to have on men’s sexual health. Firstly, the medical community has finally recognized that premature ejaculation is a health problem caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain – and that this imbalance is treatable. Along with this awareness, the medical community is finally working to define “premature ejaculation.” Even with all the talk about premature ejaculation, experts in the field have yet to reach a consensus.

If doctor’s are going to prescribe Dapoxetine for premature ejaculation, then they must have some set diagnosing criteria for the condition. In general, premature ejaculation simply means that the man climaxes before he or his partner wants him to. But surveys show that men have very skewed ideas of how long they should be lasting in bed. One survey showed that English men think that they should be lasting at least 12 minutes whereas Americans believe that they should be lasting at least 15 minutes. Many men also said that they wanted to last at least 20 minutes. So how long are most men actually lasting in bed? The average is just over 7 minutes.

Though opinions differ, many medical professionals have started using the 2-minute marker for diagnosing premature ejaculation. For these men, the increase in lasting time which Dapoxetine gives could mean significant improvements to their ability to have healthy sexual relationships. But what about all those men who want to last longer but aren’t necessarily under average – should they be allowed to take Dapoxetine too?

While doctors can’t agree on what amount of time merits a man taking Dapoxetine for premature ejaculation, they can generally agree on one thing: men should talk to their partners about sex. In the same survey, the men were also asked if they thought they should be lasting longer. Most of them said yes. However, almost all of their partners said that their lasting time was just fine. This shows just how skewed of perceptions men can have about their sex lives and sexual adequacy.

If you are lasting longer than a few minutes in bed but are not pleased with your performance, you should talk to your partner first before you start taking Dapoxetine for premature ejaculation You may be surprised to find that your partner really does not want you to last any longer in bed. On the contrary, if your inability to last long in bed is disrupting your ability to have healthy sexual relationships, then it is time to talk to your doctor about whether Dapoxetine is right for you. Always be open and honest when you talk to your doctor so he/she can help you find the right treatment for your lifestyle.
