Atrophic vaginitis or vaginal dryness and irritation are classic symptoms of perimenopause. It not only happens while you're having intercourse. It can also happen in everyday life and can range from mild and tolerable to irritating and annoying.
A thin layer of moisture coming from the blood vessels of the wall normally lubricates the vaginal walls. More so when a woman is sexually aroused. But this perimenopause symptom, also linked to the female hormone imbalance, changes that. Studies show that the decrease of estrogen is the number one cause of vaginal dryness. A lack of it also causes the vaginal tissues to atrophy (cells become thinner, drier and less elastic than normal).

Symptoms of this could be a stinging sensation, some itching, urinary incontinence, painful intercourse and some bleeding during sex. Other factors to trigger vaginal irritation would be stress, anxiety, depression, lack of sleep and rest, infections (bacterial, viral and sexual in nature), medicine like antihistamines and antidepressants, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, allergic reaction to douches and chemicals in soaps, and unresolved relationship problems.

What do you do when dryness and irritation strikes?

Well first, check your diet. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water to prevent h20 loss. Soy and flaxseed will be a big help in your diet. Try to have supplements on hand as well like products such as vitamin E oil, vaginal moisturizers, or vaginal lubricants (preferably water-based so that you won't get enough problems if you have an allergy to chemicals). As mentioned earlier, stress is a major contributor to the irritation. Don't over-exercise. Try to do tried-but-tested stress reduction techniques such as meditation or yoga.

Try alternative medicine as well. Take teas such as chamomile and peppermint to make you relax. If you're into medicine, you can try hormone replacement therapy (HRT), but it really isn't recommended since there are some cases that have worsened and more severe vaginal dryness and irritation. Vaginal estrogen therapy could be considered a viable option. If you don't feel it that much, then talk to your physician about possible alternatives to it. Also, consider carefully if you want surgery, as it is a risky thing to do. But of course, if you and your doctor settle on a compromise where you'll be more comfortable, then that would be much better.

If all else fails, the key may just be in your relationship with your spouse. Unresolved issues can be a possible factor in having this condition. Open line of communication is very much recommended. When all issues have been set, then you can both concentrate on regular sexual satisfaction since this will be a big help in promoting blood flow to the vaginal walls, thereby lessening and reducing dryness.
